I was born in Mansfield Ohio to Anderson and Teresa Brown Jr. later along with my younger brother Jamaal Brown. I went on to complete High School at Antelope Valley High School while competing as a three sport athlete, attending summer college courses, and starting my early coaching career in the local Los Angeles youth recreational leagues. Later I enlisted into the United States Marine Corps and achieved a meritorious promotion to Lance corporal and a Honorable Discharge. I have had the privilege to work and maintained positive professional careers in major national companies like Bank of America, Geico, and Jostens. During my coaching career I have maintained a winning record all while working to produce my first of many collegiate athletes.

I was born and raised in Northern New Jersey, just six miles west of The Big Apple. The proximity to New York City fostered my life-long love of the arts, and instilled in me a respect for culture and living. I travel back east often, both to visit my family and take in the vitality of Broadway, the museums, the Upper West Side, the hip Soho scene, Little Italy, and the little street fairs and outdoor markets that bring international music, food, and people and perspectives into my field of learning – but California is my home! I am the mother of three adult children, a cum laude graduate of the University of California San Diego. I earned my teaching credential at San Diego State University, and earned two MBAs – one in marketing and leadership and one in healthcare – at Coleman University. Each day, I hope that my students: Experience true learning as a discipline, as an art, as an adventure, and as an act of creation.
Charles ParisiVice Chair
Charles Parisi brings nearly thirty years of entrepreneurial activities to SET, having worked for start-up companies as well as having successfully launched multiple start-up companies. His experience in marketing, sales and distribution in industries ranging from consumer packaged goods and nutritional supplements to financial services and non-profits have been marked by creativity, discipline and engaged enthusiasm.
After selling his financial services company in 2002, Charles launched his marketing company, Quintessence, to optimize the marketing capital for early stage companies where he has an investment interest. Charles is the CEO of Quintessence and Assurance Venture Associates, the entity through which he invests in primarily consumer-focused young companies. At the present time, he is primarily focused on one start-up company, Deedli, and its revolutionary sharing economy app.
After having met Father Joe Carroll in 1999, Charles commenced a stretch of service to nonprofits including serving on the Board of Directors of Father Joe’s Villages, Toussaint Academy, La Cuna as well as the Marketing Committee for the Hospital Infantil de las Californias. Having a passion for helping “advantaged” kids from inner city environments, reflective of his early years in Queens, NY, Charles continues to work on the development of programs and educational opportunities for advantaged kids through a focused, collaborative approach architected on his philosophy of accountability, character and excellence (ACE).
When Charles isn’t working and engaged in community activities, he is an active participant in many different sporting activities. The most important aspect of his life is being a father to an outstanding, smart, talented and compassionate teenage daughter, Ava, the person who brings light to his life. Charles and his daughter co-founded Songs For Shelter in 2015, a benefit concert to raise awareness and money for homeless teens who are often sleeping on the streets of San Diego (www.songsforshelter.com).

As President of Retirement Strategies Group, Inc., Richard is responsible for leading the company’s Retirement Made Simple mission to help each and every client work toward lifestyle and income security during their retirement years as well as helping companies design, develop and implement state-of-the-art retirement and executive benefits programs. Richard brings 20 plus years of experience in the financial services industry with an extensive background in sales management, supervision, accounting, financial planning and financial operations.
Richard graduated from St. John’s University in 1994 with a degree in Business Administration. Prior to joining Retirement Strategies Group, Richard served as the CFO and the Financial Operations Principal (FINRA Series 27 license) for Retirement Capital Group Securities, a registered FINRA Broker-Dealer. His responsibilities included preparing and analyzing monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements. Preparing quarterly FINRA Focus filings, preparing budgets by establishing schedules, collecting and consolidating financial data. Additional responsibilities included forecasting company business activity and financial position in the areas of revenue, expenses, and earnings based on past, present and expected operations. He also led the broker dealer in its annual audit preparation.
Richard holds FINRA Series 7, 24, 27, 63 licenses and is registered to conduct and supervise securities and insurance business in 48 states.
Richard and his wife Amy have three daughters and reside in San Diego, CA. Richard and his family are very active in Corpus Christi Church and Richard also serves on the Board of Directors for Retirement Strategies Group, San Diego’s Finest All Stars, an organization dedicated to teaching teamwork and leadership to children through sports and Coleman Tech Charter HS.
Captain Tony McElroy
Captain Tony McElroy
Tony McElroy was employed with the San Diego Police Department for 32 years. He was a Captain and former Commanding Officer of the Southeastern and Southern Division stations.
Tony was born in Chicago, Illinois. He was raised in San Diego where he attended O’Farrell Junior High School, Morse High School, and San Diego State University. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration and pursued a Master of Science degree in Organizational Leadership from National University. He is a graduate of the 231st FBI National Academy.
During Tony’s tenure as a lieutenant, He was Commanding Officer of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), Air Support, Homeland Security, and Critical Incident Management Units. He was also assigned as the Watch Commander where he reviewed and approved all arrests made by department personnel, ensuring that the arrests were lawful and proper.
Tony was previously assigned as a Community Relations Special Assistant to the Chief of Police. In that position, he was a liaison between the Department and the Community, and advised the Chief of Police on cultural issues.
Tony worked in several different facets of the San Diego Police Department. He was a field-training officer and supervised a neighborhood policing team. He has worked in the Gang Unit, Narcotics Unit, Juvenile Investigations Unit, and Crimes Against Persons Unit. Tony was the Department lead during the inception of the San Diego Police Department’s Vehicle Stop Data Collection, a study that took a look at Racial Profiling and Non-Biased Based Policing.
He was an academy instructor and diversity trainer for the department. He is also a consultant and trainer for the United States Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
Tony has been married to his wife, Kimberly for twenty-nine years. They have four children, Ebony, Monique, and Brandi, and David. They also have seven grandchildren, Briana, Bryson, Anaiya, Brooklynn, Jaliyah, Jamaj, and Ryan Marie. Tony is a running and exercise enthusiast and also enjoys cycling, basketball, golf and tennis.

Lisa Anguiano, MSA CPA founded San Diego Tax Specialists in 2010, focusing on closely-held businesses and individual taxation. San Diego Tax Specialists currently serves clients in several industries with revenues up to $30 million. Prior to starting her own accounting firm, Lisa Anguiano worked for a large law firm in San Francisco and two accounting firms in San Diego. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of San Diego and her Master of Science degree in Accountancy and Taxation from San Diego State University. Lisa Anguiano is currently a member of the SDSU Business Mentorship Program, the Hera Hub Entrepreneurs Program, the California Society of CPAs, the SD Volunteer Lawyers Program, the SD VITA Military Education Program, and the Austin Parents Association. In her free time, Lisa enjoys presenting educational tax seminars, volunteering with Comprehensive Autism and Education Services, and overseeing the Campos Homeless Program.
Dr. Bui is Vice President & IP Counsel for ViaCyte, Inc., a private, venture-capital backed company headquartered in San Diego, California. ViaCyte is a leader in the emerging field of regenerative medicine and focused on the treatment of diabetes where globally over 200 million people and their families are affected. The company is developing a transformative cell replacement therapy to free people with insulin-requiring diabetes from painful and frequent insulin injections, strict diet regimens, constant blood sugar monitoring, and serious chronic health conditions associated with the disease.
Dr. Bui oversees all matters related to intellectual property and is instrumental in the execution of corporate partnerships and strategic alliances by big pharma. Prior to joining ViaCyte, Liz was with the law firm of DLA Piper, one of the largest law firms worldwide, where she focused on IP asset management and protection strategies. Dr. Bui holds a Ph.D. in Anatomy & Cell Biology from the University of California, Los Angeles and was a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Irvine where her research focused on the biochemistry of Alzheimer’s disease. She received her J.D. from Pepperdine University School of Law in Malibu, California. Liz is on the Board of Directors of the Vietnamese American Bar Association of Southern California (VABASC); and an Adjunct Professor of Law at University of San Diego School of Law for the Entrepreneurship Clinic.
Liz’s passions outside of work and family focus on mentoring and helping to create access to quality education and improved life experiences for young adults. Liz served for six years on the Board of Directors of Toussaint Academy of San Diego, an affiliate of Father Joe’s Villages, with Charles Parisi. Toussaint Academy provided services including academic, residential living with on-site staff, meals, psychosocial assessments, individualized case management services, employment and vocational, health care, counseling, and alumni post-graduate services to qualifying homeless high school age adolescents, ages 14 – 18. Liz is also on the Women’s Symposium Committee at The Academy of Our Lady of Peace (OLP), the oldest private (all-girls) high school in San Diego, and helped to source & develop OLP’s first biotechnology course, which she hopes to do the same at SET.
Liz is active with Giselle’s Pledge, a mother/daughter community service organization, and Casas de Luz, a youth-centric program helping to build sustainable communities in Tijuana.
